Hearth Room

This project was looking for a simple fresh up.  We assisted with the purchase of new furniture a fireplace revamp and designing two built in's to help with storage.  The most important thing in this room was keeping the furniture to scale.   Large furniture can make a room look small on the contrary small furniture will make a room seem uninviting and cold.  A good tip is to measure you space, draw up a quick floor plan and then draw to scale little pieces of paper furniture you are looking at buying.  Place these pieces on your floor plan this will give you a good idea of how large they are.  Another way is to tape off on your floor the size of the furniture.  Will you have enough room for traffic?

This room sits right off the client's kitchen.   Built in's are a wonderful addition to any room.  They increase storage and display space and also contribute architectural detail to the room.  The dark espresso stain compliments the already existing wood work on the fireplace and trim.

The fireplace received a facelift with new tile.  This is the same tile used in the clients kitchen and it links the two rooms making them feel cohesive.

A new tile hearth with 9 x 12 metallic black tiles.

A second built in houses the television and other electronics.  It is also a place to store the client's DVD collection.  White plantation shades adorn the two large picture windows that look out to a beautiful lake.  These shades help cut down on direct sun in the late afternoon and evening.

This picture was taken after all the wood paneling was covered up.  The fireplace was electric and did not operate so it was removed.

View from the living room towards the entry way.  The old handrail was removed because it was rusty and had peeling paint.

Stairs leading up to the bedrooms.  All three sets of stairs were carpeted.  No other surface had carpet.

Living room view from the top of the entrance stairs.  A great look at the new built in's that increase storage, add space to display favorite items and also house the media equipment. The best part...the window bench where you can curl up with a good book.

Built in's now adorn the wall where the fireplace used to be.
New railings at the entry make an impressive first look into the home.  The railings were made by the homeowner from old oak barn wood.  . The entry also received new slate tile floors and the stairs coming up were refinished.
Refinished stair risers and treads.  The wood under the carpet was in perfect condition.  With some elbow grease and a few late nights the stairs ended up looking fabulous.
